Abstract: While Herbert Simon is perhaps best known for promulgating the concept of ‘bounded rationality’ in social science models, his foundational work in this area appeared around the same time as other very fundamental work he did on the formation of skew size distributions in a variety of contexts, on the one hand, and the birth of artificial intelligence, on the other. Here I draw out some connections between these ostensibly distinct facets of his research by linking them to certain heuristics that he promulgated to his students and others, ‘rules’ both for doing research and living one’s life.
