To protect the Amazon, defend the people of the forest
Maria do Socorro Costa Silva
Chapter 10 in Standing up for a Sustainable World, 2020, pp 125-127 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
In the Amazonian State of Para, Brazil, the Norwegian firm Norsk Hydro processes aluminium ore, extracted from deforested land, in one of the largest aluminium refineries worldwide. Huge volumes of toxic effluents are discharged in a major tributary of the Amazon River. As a matter of survival, the devastated local community created Cainquiama, a 20,000 members strong organization chaired by Maria do Socorro. Norway as a country has a favorable environmental record; Norsk Hydro’s dealings in the Amazon basin don’t vindicate that record, to say the least.
