Of chainsaws and grace: direct action by eco-vigilantes in the Philippines
Bobby Chan
Chapter 11 in Standing up for a Sustainable World, 2020, pp 128-130 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
There are environmental laws in the Philippines, albeit no reliable public authority to enforce them. With his eco-vigilantes, Bobby Chan, a lawyer by training, fights illegal logging and fishing. The approach is kept within legal boundaries, it works, but it is dangerous; several members of the group have been abducted, tortured and murdered. Nevertheless the actions go on as they had for the last twenty years.
