Introduction to Part IV

Claude Henry

Chapter 22 in Standing up for a Sustainable World, 2020, pp 195-196 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: In this chapter, Claude Henry introduces the young people who are Part IV’s “coming generations on the front line†of action against climate change. This young generation is quite clear about what they need to do to tackle the catastrophe that will unfold over their lifetime. They are uniting behind the scientists and asking that their leaders do the same. As Henry states, “It is obvious that scientific knowledge is crucial for understanding the problems and for opening up paths to overcome them†. Nevertheless, the chasm between coming generations and older ones is not only about the role of science - students refuse in ever-greater numbers job offers that don’t lead to our transitioning towards a sustainable society. Henry also notes that women are leading these climate action initiatives, that men have mostly failed, and that it is time to pass the baton.
