From climate scientist to climate communicator: a process of evolution
Michael E. Mann
Chapter 60 in Standing up for a Sustainable World, 2020, pp 433-437 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
In 1998, Michael Mann, then a young physiscist, published with two colleagues a research paper in Nature. A graph in the paper shows how the planet mean temperature takes a steep and unprecedented upturn in the second half of the twentieth century. That graph came to be known as the climate Hockey Stick. Well received by the scientific community, the paper came under fierce attacks from fossil fuels executives as well as Republican politicians, judges and commentators. Wars rage for years. Michael Mann was accused of scientific fraud, of which he has been resoundingly cleared. Along the way he proved a talented debater an scientific communicator. He even published in 2017 a book specially for children, The Tantrum that Saved the World, where the main character young Sophia behaves like anticipating another talented communicator, Greta Thunberg.
