Chapter 5 in Research Handbook on International Child Abduction, 2023, pp 63-77 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Since 1996 a series of statistical studies have been conducted, led by Professor Nigel Lowe, looking at the operation of the 1980 Hague Convention on the Civil Aspects of International Child Abduction. These statistical studies are the only global source of data on the operation of the 1980 Convention and, as such, provide vital information on how the Convention is operating. This chapter examines the history and methodology behind these studies, together with a brief summary of their findings and analysis of their value and influence. The chapter also considers the challenges confronted in undertaking the surveys, their limitations, and the possibilities for future studies.
