Abstract:
Clear policy is exceptionally important in how well the mental health field is able to operate. There are two types of policy that are relevant: de facto policy, which reflects how a field performs, and de jure policy which is policy enacted in legislation. In this paper we examine five areas of policy activity regarding mental health. These are Prevalence and Incidence of Disorder and Disability; Implementation of Integrated Care Systems; Inpatient and Community Based Services; Movement towards Recovery; and Assessing Systems and Outcomes. In each case we review what has been done in this area and what has been achieved as a result. Subsequently, we argue that integration of these policy areas will be very important in making future progress in the mental health field. Finally, we explore various actions that will be necessary to foster integrated policy.
