Qualitative and exploratory methods in mental health policy research

Hugo Kamya

Chapter 3 in Research Handbook on Mental Health Policy, 2022, pp 29-42 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: This chapter seeks to expand on research theoretical formulations by examining qualitative research methodologies used in mental health policy research. The chapter examines key paradigms of inquiry including positivism, realism, and constructivism. It defines key axioms for these key paradigms as it discusses what is knowledge, nature of knowledge, the way knowledge is accumulated, goodness of knowledge, values, ethics, and hegemony in the context of mental health policy research. The chapter also invites researchers to recognize the importance and the values of indigenous research and the needs of diverse populations.
