Quantitative methods for mental health research

Abstract: Quantitative methods employ discrete data in the form of numbers or concrete classifications of people and issues. They include studies on the incidence of hospitalizations of people for mental health reasons, or the evidence on the effectiveness of cognitive-behavioral therapy in the treatment of depression. Mental health policy can benefit from knowledge drawn from quantitative methods on the incidence of mental health problems, the explanation of reasons for these problems, and the evaluation of services designed to ameliorate them. Quantitative mental health research employs research designs that deal with the issue of causation and statistics that deal with the issue of chance. These features enhance the confidence we have in our knowledge of how best to employ mental health policy. Evidence on the benefits of certain mental health policies is essential to this endeavor.
