Innovation mechanisms in the bioeconomy

Kutay Cingiz, Justus Wesseler and Max Kardung

Chapter 8 in Handbook on the Bioeconomy, 2025, pp 139-151 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: With the increase in demand and need for sustainable biomass production, food and feed availability, and alternatives for renewable energy, the bioeconomy is at the centre of sustainable and circular economic development. For this reason, the supply side of the bioeconomy market needs sustainable, innovative approaches. We can observe these technological innovations in biotechnology. In this chapter, we present the mechanisms behind the development of new technologies and innovations in the bioeconomy. We consider the regional sustainable developments and investment opportunities for the technology options of the future. Moreover, we focus on the process of creating biotechnology, constraints such as time and liability, and prospective technology options in the future.
