Bringing together finance and sustainability: the perspective of A4S

Helen Slinger

Chapter 2 in Handbook of Accounting and Sustainability, 2022, pp 10-25 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: This chapter explores how different actors in the finance community, including companies, investors, regulators, accounting bodies and business schools, can support the transition to a sustainable future. Sustainable accounting practices are the foundation for resilient organizations that have positive environmental and social impact. At the same time, capital markets have enormous power to shape a sustainable economy by taking environmental, social and governance (ESG) factors into account in their activities. This chapter looks at the barriers that finance professionals face in introducing sustainability into financial decision making and how these can be overcome through a combination of bringing together different groups (networks) and expanding finance professionals' skill sets (know-how), with The Prince's Accounting for Sustainability Project (A4S) playing a vital facilitation role in both areas. In particular, the chapter argues that business practice and academic research and teaching must reinforce each other.
