Narrative 11: The "lucky" one
Ayah Wehbe
Chapter 35 in Research Handbook on Disability Policy, 2023, pp 418-420 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Writing about her experience of education as a Deaf Muslim woman growing up in Australia, Ayah critically questions how “lucky” she has been to have access to education. This narrative piece considers the intersections of culture, disability and gender. Why is it that people who also come from different cultural backgrounds and people with hearing loss/ disability should feel lucky or have gratitude for these opportunities (if and when they’re) presented? This feeling of doubt, and always having to try harder to be accepted or to prove our worth is even stronger.
