Narrative 2: Evil: disabled villains in media

Abstract: Disabled people in media are often either non-existent or depicted problematically. Representation is limited to one-dimensional characters, defined only by disability, or the misrepresentation of disabilities as harmful stereotypes. More than that, we seem to only exist as victims, heroes or villains. In this piece, Em Dewhurst identifies problematic tropes which limit the way disabled people are represented in popular media, and suggests ways viewers can critique their viewing habits. While it is not possible to fix all harmful disability representation by simply asking these questions, beginning to question the media we consume is an important step in tackling ableism.
