Chapter 1 in Research Handbook on Critical Theory, 2026, pp 1-1 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Combining Hegelian and Marxist philosophy, psychoanalysis, political analysis, aesthetics, and cultural critique, Horkheimer and his circle of scholars created a critical theory of capitalist society of their era that has become famous and influential for its concepts of the culture industry, state capitalism, the authoritarian personality, the administered society, and many other socio-political themes. The critical theorists produced important works in philosophy, sociology, aesthetics, and other disciplines, along with their critical perspectives on society and culture.
