Liberation and new sensibility
Charles Reitz
Chapter 11 in Research Handbook on Critical Theory, 2026, pp 115-123 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
New projects of liberation were emerging in a variety of forms in the 1960s: liberation theology, liberation philosophy, women's liberation, Black liberation, sexual liberation, gay liberation, and liberation education, as well as Earth liberation and animal liberation. Liberation was elevated to the centremost theme in the critical social theory of Herbert Marcuse. The struggle for a society without violence, destruction, and pollution emerged from what Marcuse called the new sensibilities of youth in the 1960s, their vision of liberation. These new sensibilities culminated in a new aesthetic ethos undergirding a new socialist politics and economics.
