Forms of liberation in the Marxist tradition

Kenneth Surin

Chapter 12 in Research Handbook on Critical Theory, 2026, pp 124-139 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: There are numerous paradigms and theoretical foci for producing concepts of liberation—religious, social, political, economic, psychological, cultural, and so forth. These paradigms and foci can also be individual or collective, and even here there are sub-divisions: for instance, collective liberations can be national in scale (as in the successful independence struggles against colonial powers in the post-war period), or regional/tribal (as when a regional people seek their liberation, such as the Basque people seeking independence from Spain), or racial (as when South African apartheid was overcome), and so on. Even within critical theory there are demarcations, such as the Frankfurt School, the several other philosophical and theological schools of liberation, and of course Marxist more generally. Rather than engage in the futile task of seeking to cover all these paradigms and foci, this chapter will focus on Marxism in the context of producing a concept of liberation.
