Marcuse on science and experience

Andrew Feenberg

Chapter 21 in Research Handbook on Critical Theory, 2026, pp 237-244 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: Marcuse's theory of science in One-Dimensional Man was based on his early study of phenomenology. By validating lived experience, phenomenology offered an alternative to the dominant scientism and technological rationality, but it had to be historicised to play a role in his Marxism. The result is a version of critical theory different from that of Horkheimer and Adorno. The difference explains their disagreement over the role of the student movement.
