Critical pedagogy

Peter Mayo

Chapter 28 in Research Handbook on Critical Theory, 2026, pp 313-323 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: This chapter traces the genealogy of critical pedagogy within the context of critical theory. It is argued that this approach to pedagogy, unmasking the ideologies underlying dominant and subversive discourses and alternative thinking about and forms of learning as sources of resistance, renegotiation, and renewal, has existed since time immemorial. The authors who adopt this approach did so under different names and still do so today, pointing to similar approaches equated with critical pedagogy. The term is said to have been coined by Henry A. Giroux and Roger I. Simon at an American Educational Research Association meeting and carried forward at a conference at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education in Toronto. The chapter highlights key figures and movements associated with or that fall within the purview of critical pedagogy.
