Chapter 3 in Research Handbook on Critical Theory, 2026, pp 15-27 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
While critical theory generally follows a theoretical pattern set by Karl Marx's Historical Materialism, questions of class and class consciousness seem to play a marginal role. By drawing on the works of Georg Lukács, Theodor W. Adorno and Max Horkheimer, as well as on the psychoanalytical writings of the Frankfurt School, this chapter aims to reconstruct the references to class consciousness in critical theory. Finally, these insights are contrasted with the theoretical realm of cultural studies.
