Chapter 31 in Research Handbook on Critical Theory, 2026, pp 352-364 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
This chapter deals with film and cinema as a subject of critical theory. By going through the relevant writings of Theodor W. Adorno and Max Horkheimer, Walter Benjamin, and Siegfried Kracauer, the chapter elaborates on their statements and references to film and cinema. Taking cultural studies into account, an attempt is then made to use this as a basis for presenting the connections and potentials of critical theory for the sociological approach to films and to emphasise the importance of a critical stance on films as mediators of society and social reality.
