Critique
Douglas Kellner
Chapter 6 in Research Handbook on Critical Theory, 2026, pp 52-60 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
The Frankfurt School concept of critique was influenced by the Enlightenment practice of doubt and opposition to dominant forms of religious belief, social prejudice, and authority, while championing emancipation and autonomy from religious, social, and political authorities. Yet skeptical of the Enlightenment and dominant forms of liberalism, the Frankfurt School also took up the Marxist critique of ideology and criticised the dominant ideas of the dominant social class and economic and political forces of the era, ranging from the family to the culture industry, and from schooling to the dominant economic powers to the state.
