Eighteenth century

Megan Gallagher

Chapter 23 in Research Handbook on the History of Political Thought, 2024, pp 254-264 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: This chapter outlines a handful of concerns that are currently emergent in the study of eighteenth-century political thought: ancients and moderns; global political thought; political economy; republicanism; the Scottish Enlightenment; and women’s contributions. While none of these are new interests (with the possible exceptions of global political thought and women’s contributions, which are a comparatively recent development), each is receiving particular attention within the secondary literature. I argue that this represents a growing curiosity about counter-narratives, as opposed to a more traditional interest in grand narratives.
