Abstract: Catharine Macaulay was a prolific and influential political philosopher in the eighteenth century, writing in what is now known as the republican political tradition. Although her work was quickly forgotten after her death in 1791, there has been a renewal of interest in Macaulay’s ideas in our own time as scholars have come to reappraise the history of both republican political thinking and of women as political theorists. Macaulay developed a form of republicanism that is conceptually relational, constructed around ideals of civic virtue and the common good, as well as an inclusive and collaborative public discourse. Her work was a significant influence on Mary Wollstonecraft, who built on Macaulay’s foundations in her feminist republican theory.
