Water and sustainability in South Africas fruit value networks

Abstract: Despite increased concerns over environmental sustainability and climate change, academic inquiries informed by Global Value Chain and Global Production Network approaches have largely ignored the environmental dynamics underpinning globalized agriculture and trade. This chapter joins recent efforts to address this gap. The Western Cape of South Africa and its export-oriented horticulture industry present an ideal case study for this research as water is scarce, crucial for economic development, and continues to be unequally distributed along racial lines due to the country's apartheid legacy. This chapter examines changes in water management on export-oriented fruit farms in South Africa and interrogates associated sustainability claims.
