Uneven development: commodities, chains and networks

Kelle Howson, Warwick E. Murray and Johannes Rehner

Chapter 3 in Ethical Value Networks in International Trade, 2022, pp 37-51 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: This chapter provides a brief overview of concepts from which ethical value networks (EVeNs) build. It discusses the early concepts of global commodity chains (GCCs) and the subsequent transformation analytically into global value chains (GVCs) and then global value networks (GVNs). In outlining this chronology it critiques the various concepts. Ultimately, it identifies a missing link in chains and network analysis - ethical value - laying the groundwork for the discussion and case studies in this collection.
