Intersectional feminist activisms in Europe: invisibility, inclusivity and affirmation

Abstract: Intersectional feminist groups in Europe are not new to mobilising and organising themselves politically. Yet, they have been mostly invisible both in European politics and academia. Unlike the USA, European gender scholars researching activisms and mobilisations have mainly focused on mainstream (white) women’s movements and how ‘inclusive’ they are of intersectional constituencies. This chapter contributes to filling in this gap by bringing intersectional feminist activists from the periphery to the centre of the inquiry. Namely, it investigates how intersectional feminists - such as, Black feminists, Afrofeminists and Romani feminists - have affirmed themselves as agents of change and created new forms of collective (political) resistance in contemporary Europe.
