Seeking intersectionality in feminist governance

Erica Townsend-Bell

Chapter 7 in Handbook of Feminist Governance, 2023, pp 88-99 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: Feminist governance is concerned with fomenting gender equality. Intersectionality is rooted in a mandate to probe the notion and implementation of equality in a deeper, more nuanced manner. While some feminist governance initiatives purport to engage with the insights of intersectionality, attempts to integrate these insights to the multi-layered spaces of said governance are often wanting. This intersectionally-oriented review engages with the ongoing problem of gaps between intersectional theory and praxis that help to explain this mismatch. I elaborate the ways in which these gaps function to limit attention to some kinds of feminist subjects and feminist projects in ways that are often, though not always, unintended. I follow by considering the ways in which a more careful engagement with the insights of intersectional and decolonial feminism can help to move past this impasse.
