EAEU and authoritarian regionalism

Alessandra Russo

Chapter 14 in The Elgar Companion to the Eurasian Economic Union, 2024, pp 192-207 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: In the last years the Eurasian Economic Union has been under scholarly examination to grasp whether it represents yet another exercise of regional institution-building with no actual integration results or whether it has served as a trigger in terms of regional governance. The chapter focuses on the extent to which concepts such as “authoritarian regionalism” as well as regime-boosting regionalism and protective integration might help better understanding the design and functioning of the EAEU; in particular, how a regime security agenda put forward by the EAEU’s member states is reflected in their ability and willingness to cooperate at the regional level.
