Platform capitalism and the gig economy
.
Chapter 4 in Industry 4.0 and the Future of Work, 2024, pp 104-137 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Chapter 4 first outlines the rise of ‘platform capitalism’, which is now established as a model of business involving large networks of users and resources that are connected via the Internet. We also examine the emerging system of capitalist accumulation wherein massive amounts of often free, personal data are garnered through user-interaction by profit-making companies like Facebook and Google. We delve into the different forms that platform capitalism is taking, explore the often-neglected spatial and gender implications of the so-called ‘gig economy’, and consider the impact of the rise of platform capitalism for workers in both the Global North and the Global South. We consider how digitalization is creating new spatial relationships of work and what this means for workers and the state. Finally, we argue that despite rhetoric that the New Economy represents a fresh form of capitalism, it is very much reliant upon Old Economy work practices.
