Resilience of urban systems: Perspective for the integration of climate resilience actions in the resilient cities network

Arnoldo Matus Kramer, Rodríguez-Izquierdo Emilio and Abril Cid

Chapter 17 in The Elgar Companion to Urban Infrastructure Governance, 2022, pp 308-328 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: The resilience of urban systems is a critical concept in times of climate change and global environmental degradation due to the vulnerability of urban infrastructure and its population to factors such as intense and extreme climate events. This chapter investigates how 12 megacities and 25 cities in coastal and delta areas within the Resilient Cities Network have integrated climate change within their resilience strategies. It identifies key climate change impacts in these cities and key themes of climate resilience such as enhancing adaptive capacity, nature-based solutions, water resilience, and the resilience of the built environment to discuss synergies between cities resilience strategies and climate change actions, but also differences on climate resilience among cities situated in the Global South and the Global North.
