Housing urbanism: Collective representation and its impact in the city

Abstract: This chapter examines the tensions between institutionalization efforts and decentralized organic social forces in the history of housing in Mexico. To do so, I analyze the relationship between forms of collective representation in the composition of stakeholders present in the process of production of affordable housing in Mexico. I discuss the impact of different forms of collective representation in the quality delivered in spatial and physical terms, and regarding community development and insertion in the territory. Based on this analysis, I propose that formality and informality are not mutually exclusive and future urban visions need to include both. Furthermore, I advance collective representation in the production of housing as an empowering tool to navigate the context of the developing countries where the formal and informal sectors interconnect in complex ways.
