Models for ordered choices
William Greene
Chapter 15 in Handbook of Choice Modelling, 2024, pp 393-425 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
This chapter surveys a set of models for discrete ordered choices. The model is a standard platform for analysis of rating scales such as health status or subjective well being. Applicationsare ubiquitous and in the current literature can be found throughout the social sciences. A running application to self reported health is developed through the survey. The survey starts from the foundational model, the probit and logit specifications for binary outcomes. The ordered choice model is a natural extension of the binary choice case. Results are presented for estimation and inference. Partial effects and fit measures are developed. After the central results for the main specification are developed, we present a variety of extensions, including fixed and random effects for panel data, models for individual heterogeneity and two part models such as those for sample selection.
