Shareholder value - delivery and outcomes

.

Chapter 2 in Beyond Shareholder Value, 2021, pp 38-76 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: Reviewing the trends in recent decades, the chapter finds companies have delivered enormous shareholder value through dividends, share buybacks and share price increases. This is juxtaposed against the macroeconomic trends in US and Canada that reveal subpar outcomes for large sections of the society - stagnant incomes for most working families and rising household debt. Shareholder value governance fails a large majority of people that experienced no meaningful economic progress since the 1980s. Socioeconomic outcomes reveal that shareholder value deepens inequalities and undermines the public interest.
