Managing demand response in the residential sector

Donal P. Finn, Francesco D’Ettorre, Fabiano Pallonetto and Mattia De Rosa

Chapter 12 in Research Handbook on Energy Management, 2025, pp 276-308 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: The current chapter reviews demand response research in the residential sector. Demand response is initially briefly evaluated from a historical perspective where measures were largely implemented by utilities as a demand reduction measure during critical or peak grid periods. The impact of the increased penetration of renewable energy on the electrical grid in recent years is examined next. Specific demand response options in the residential sector are outlined, followed by a detailed discussion of the methods used for the development of demand response measures in the residential sector. The review is closed by a summary of recent developments from an economic perspective in the residential sector.
