Chapter 14 in Research Handbook on Energy Management, 2025, pp 334-369 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
This chapter discusses the transformation of energy systems through the lens of the “4Ds”: decarbonisation, decentralisation, digitalisation, and democratisation. It examines the challenges and potential of decentralised energy systems, highlighting the shift towards renewable energy, the role of local energy markets, and energy autonomy. Additionally, it addresses technological advancements, energy-efficiency barriers, and the economic and social factors influencing community involvement in energy projects. The chapter emphasises the need for innovation and policy changes to fully implement these decentralised energy models.
