The role of aggregators in energy transition

Abstract: The energy sector has been rapidly evolving due to trends such as more ambitious decarbonization policies, new low-carbon technologies, the deployment of distributed energy systems based on variable renewable sources, the dissemination of electric vehicles and stationary energy storage systems, the development of energy communities, and the consequent empowerment of consumers. This shift introduces challenges of economic, environmental, regulatory, and societal nature. In this setting, middleware entities generally designated as aggregators are gaining prominence, enabling the gathering of individual demand-side resources to provide services to grid operators, with benefits for multiple stakeholders. This chapter offers a comprehensive overview of the role and potential of aggregators, also presenting existing barriers and recommendations to overcome them. Moreover, a brief review of optimization models supporting aggregators’ decision-making is made and some existing market models in the European Union (EU) and UK are presented. Illustrative approaches to models of the aggregator's optimization problems are outlined.
