Chapter 11 in The Social and Legal Impact of Autonomous Vehicles, 2025, pp 130-143 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: Chapter 11 explores the complexities of regulating autonomous vehicles (AVs). Section A examines the potential benefits of AVs to regulation, emphasizing how AV obedience could significantly decrease traffic violations. Section B argues for the persistence of traffic law due to potential control override scenarios and human oversight leading to lingering traffic infractions. Finally, Section C delves into a constitutional debate surrounding the ‘right to drive’ in an age of AVs by exploring tensions between technological efficiency and human desire for control.
