The optimist, the pessimist, and the engineer
.
Chapter 4 in The Social and Legal Impact of Autonomous Vehicles, 2025, pp 47-55 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Chapter 4 delves into the imminent era of autonomous vehicles (AVs) and its societal implications. Framed through the perspectives of an optimist, pessimist, and engineer facing a partially filled glass, Chapter 4 navigates differing viewpoints on the impending AV revolution. Chapter 4 further explores the integration of AVs into our society, outlining key points. Firstly, a complete ban on cars or human drivers is improbable due to lacking alternatives. Secondly, AV ownership models may shift towards shared use, akin to taxis. Thirdly, AVs could dominate urban driving once proven safe and efficient. Finally, transitioning to AV-only lanes on dense commuter routes could enhance safety and efficiency.
