Reflections for doing anti-racist research

Abstract: Race is fundamentally constitutive of management and organisations while the ongoing struggles against systemic racial injustice around the world have become increasingly difficult to ignore. However, frank and honest discussions of race and racism continue to trigger shame, denial, and rage in the academy and beyond. Without an anti-racist intervention, white ideologies imperceptibly shape our disciplinary norms and conventions and are unquestioningly disseminated to research students. This chapter offers a framework around how management and organisation studies may engage in anti-racist practices and generate racially reflexive scholarship. Specifically, the chapter proposes that anti-racist research recognises the i) existence, ii) diversity, and iii) knowledges of people of colour. This chapter will explore how each are disregarded through the methodological norms of management and organisation studies. Reflective questions will be offered under each part of the framework to help guide researchers interested in engaging with anti-racism in their scholarship.
