Transnational feminist methodologies: women’s rights and the construction of boundaries

Abstract: This chapter outlines transnational feminist frameworks and methodologies that can be used to study organizational and institutional phenomena related to gender in the context of women’s rights and the construction of borders and boundaries. These methodologies are used to demonstrate how transnational feminisms can be used to understand gender-focused phenomena with respect to organizational and institutional contexts that transcend localities. The chapter provides three examples of transnational feminist research, the first an embedded ethnography that examines women’s rights and resistance in a garment manufacturing plant in Mexico and the second, a close reading of text in an essay focusing on the construction of culture and borders. The third example is derived using the Covid-19 pandemic to provide potential research questions and methodologies that can be deployed to address them. Altogether, the examples demonstrate how transnational feminist methodologies can be used to understand globally connected phenomena that may be anchored in particular geographies.
