Slow reading of heavy data

Abstract: We explore a method that we call ‘reading with’, a collaborative way of reading aloud with research participants. ‘Reading with’ is informed by the slow movement in academia, as well as by Cixous’s and Diprose’s work on corporeal generosity. This enables us to elaborate on a research method that is not about us as researchers ‘giving back’ at the end of our research project when we have sorted things out, but rather a way of being and doing fieldwork grounded in a reciprocal, on-going generous act of ‘digging deeper’ and ‘climbing with words’ through joint reading. Contextualizing our reading encounters in the light of corporeal generosity, we can think of them as readings in blood, readings that hold possibilities for new insights, but, at the same time, are always at risk for ‘vampirism’ and the taking over of the other.
