Driving higher enterprise value through good governance
Steve Maslin
Chapter 7 in Research Handbook on Corporate Board Decision-Making, 2022, pp 135-161 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
This Chapter provides evidence of a positive correlation between good corporate governance behaviour and enhanced financial performance. The first part of the Chapter draws upon empirical research carried out in 2019 by the Grant Thornton Governance Institute and published in a White Paper entitled "Corporate Governance and Company Performance - a proven link between effective corporate governance and value creation". This research is based upon a study of the UK FTSE 350 companies between 2007 and 2017 and supported by academic studies globally between 1996 and 2012. The research also identifies six areas of governance behaviour that, based on its findings, are the most reliable predictors of superior financial performance. The second part of the Chapter provides a series of case studies which support the conclusions of the Grant Thornton research.
