Public sociology, a perspective on the move
Lavinia Bifulco and
Vando Borghi
Chapter 1 in Research Handbook on Public Sociology, 2023, pp 2-18 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
This Chapter, after introducing some key themes of Public Sociology (the tension between the possible and the impossible; the concept of the public as process), investigates some possible directions of further development of this approach. In particular, it focuses on some possible convergences with other perspectives (in the direction of a ‘bottom up cosmopolitanism’) and reflects on its potentialities in relation to contemporary scenarios, characterised by marketisation processes and an extreme intensification of uncertainty. A brief description of the topics covered by each Chapter and the structure of the volume is also provided.
