Methods for migration studies: data, techniques, questions

Chapter 1 in Handbook of Research Methods in Migration, 2024, pp 1-8 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: Migration studies as a field has seen tremendous change in the types of data available, the techniques used to analyse this wider variety of datasets, and as a result the kinds of questions now within the grasp of researchers to answer. This chapter reflects on these changes since the first edition of the Handbook was published in 2012. In particular, it identifies and discusses five key shifts that have particular relevance for studying migration: (1) the proliferation of social and digital media; (2) increasing acknowledgement of transparency and replicability as scientific virtues under the auspices of Open Science principles; (3) developments in how researchers conceive of race, ethnicity, and gender; (4) a growing emphasis on public impact and engagement; and (5) practical changes initiated or accelerated by COVID-19. After outlining the revised structure of the handbook and how the individual chapters speak to these broader developments, it briefly reflects on how methodological discussions connect with the substance of migration studies.
