Survey experiments in migration research

Maria Sobolewska and Laurence Lessard-Phillips

Chapter 3 in Handbook of Research Methods in Migration, 2024, pp 31-47 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: Survey experiments have become one of the most popular methods in research on public opinion for testing causal mechanisms or exploring attitudes that are sensitive and difficult to tease out with typical survey questions. They are increasingly popular within migration studies. With the advent of relatively cheap online surveys, they have become affordable and accessible, although they can be- and often are- administered in lab and face-to-face settings too. In this chapter, we highlight the growing popularity of survey experiments in the field, then offer a short primer on what exactly is a survey experiment, before focusing on the main five types of survey experiments. We highlight what research questions have been tackled and advanced by the use of each type. Finally, we address problems and limitations: from the thorny issues of validity to ethics, before we try to glean some insight into the future of this method.
