Tourist behaviour during disease outbreaks

Abstract: The tourism industry is the interplay of motivation and barrier factors. As far as barriers are concerned, it is easily affected by external factors that range from economic crises, political turmoil, terrorism, natural hazards, and technological disruptions to disease outbreaks, etc. In spite of continuous medical progress over the centuries, disease outbreaks are still a considerable threat to society, to which the tourism industry is directly linked. Some of the major disruptive outbreaks in the 20th century are Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) outbreak (2003), H1N1 Influenza in 2009, Ebola outbreak in West Africa in March 2014, Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) outbreak in 2015, and the ongoing novel Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic are worth to mention here. The pandemics develop fear and affect the decision-making process of tourists which results in a mass reduction in travelling. This chapter presents an overview of tourist behaviour during disease outbreaks and their socio-economic impacts in general and on the tourism industry in special.
