Abstract:
Given the uncertainty of the COVID-19 pandemic, it is difficult to predict future scenarios, particularly in tourism. In spite of the unparalleled impact of the present public health crisis, the tourism industry has already struggled with other harmful health predicaments. Nevertheless, previous epidemics enabled research on crisis recovery strategies and tourism resilience. Given the impact of the current pandemic, it is expected that health issues will be widely debated in future strategic plans for the new management of tourist destinations. In this sense, it is relevant to make a retrospective analysis of past health crises that affected international tourism and envision collaborative and preventive actions for a post-COVID future. This paper thus aims, through a state-of-the-art approach, to analyze tourism mitigation and resilience strategies in different past public health crises, and to foresee how the current pandemic crisis COVID-19 may condition future tourist management actions.
