Positive health impacts of tourism

Maksim Godovykh, Alan Fyall and Abraham Pizam

Chapter 9 in Handbook on Tourism, Public Health and Wellbeing, 2022, pp 124-138 from Edward Elgar Publishing

Abstract: Health is one of the main values in human life. However, there remains a gap in the tourism literature related to the positive health outcomes of tourism. Recent studies in positive psychology, medicine, and neuroscience suggest that positive emotional states and social relationships have significant effects on physical health. Considering that positive experiences and social interactions are inherent components of tourism activities, this chapter outlines several pathways of the positive health impacts of tourism, arguing that health outcomes demand additional conceptual and empirical attention in tourism theory and practice. The health impacts of tourism can be assessed subjectively through self-reported evaluations and objectively by using short-term and long-term measurements. It is important to note that although tourism can bring both positive and negative health outcomes for tourists and residents, the objective of this chapter is to primarily describe and analyze the positive health impacts of tourism.
