Chapter 26 in Research Handbook on Society and Mental Health, 2022, pp 461-481 from Edward Elgar Publishing
Abstract:
Open Dialogue is both a therapeutic approach for working with individuals experiencing psychosocial distress that emphasizes creation of dialogue and inclusion of social networks, and a way of organizing mental health services to prioritize rapid, flexible responses. Originally developed in Finland, Open Dialogue has spread internationally due to the combination of its embodiment of recovery-based practices with reports of improved clinical outcomes and positive reactions of both client and service providers. This chapter will provide a brief history of the development of the model, describe its key components, and summarize current research regarding clinical outcomes and lessons learned from previous implementations. It will also discuss evolution of the original model to include more recent developments such as incorporation of peer-support specialists, integration of culture with clinical practice, and novel approaches to implementation that may help make this promising approach more widely available.
