Data for LCSA - state of the art and outlook

Abstract: The three pillars of Life Cycle Sustainability Assessment (LCSA) - environmental, economic and social - were developed rather independently, and the state of the art regarding data collection and data availability looks different for each. Data collection is guided by particular guidelines and rules for each of the pillars, with these being most developed and standardized for the environmental one. The same is true for the availability of background databases. Difficulties in handling data in the same way across the pillars are due to differences in how underlying problems are structured. For Life Cycle Costing (LCC), upstream costs (unlike upstream emissions) are already included in the price of inputs. In Social Life Cycle Assessment (S-LCA), the focus is on impacts on groups of people, and hence the capability of organizations to manage social topics, rather than aspects directly linked to the product level, is assessed. The state of the art in data handling and ways forward for further operationalization and standardization of LCSA are discussed in this chapter.
